Dancing group of Thessaloniki

The Dancing Club of Thessaloniki was founded in December 1990. Its unchanging goal all these years has been respect for the research, knowledge, preservation and dissemination of Greek folk traditions. Mainly in the fields of music, dance and the study of the semiotics of the costumes of the different regions of Greece. The elements are inextricably linked as they complement each other.

The culture of the Greek folk tradition was formed in the post-Byzantine period. It expresses customs, habits, folk songs, tales, language, unwritten moral laws, perceptions, rules of behavior, dress, etc. However, it also expresses the fact that it has survived from earlier times, creating the ethos and lifestyle of modern Greece, and thus contributing to the preservation of our cultural identity.

Over the years, XOTH has commemorated with its events the cycle of life: birth, marriage, death, but also the cycle of the year: people’s activities at home, in agriculture, various jobs and religious holidays.

Like a large family, it reinforces the spirit of collectivism, volunteerism, cooperation and solidarity. The blood bank, its presence at social events and its support for disadvantaged groups complement the organization’s original purpose.

Through service trips, especially abroad, we strive for the unity of peoples and the merging of cultures, and a tangible example is the contribution to the establishment of the Dance Club in Graz, Austria. In addition to the dance departments, there are departments for choir, crafts and musical instrument instruction.
