The International Festival of Highland Folklore in Zakopane, as an extremely colorful and spectacular event, has always drawn a lot of interest from professional and amateur photographers. In 2014 the idea was born that the Festival should be accompanied by a photo competition. The competition was named ‘The Element of Folklore’. Today, it is an annual event and its effects are presented in the form of an open-air post-competition exhibition. This initiative has drawn a lot of attention from the very beginning. Every year, nearly 80 journalists are accredited in the Festival's press office, most of them are photojournalists. There are also crowds of amateur photographers coming to the festival events with whatever equipment they have - SLR cameras, compact cameras and smartphones. All outdoor events are particularly popular. The ‘Element of Folklore’ competition presents awards to all enthusiasts of highlander folklore – both professional and amateur.
